Coach’s Corner - Week of August 10, 2009

“Teaching Children and Young Adults Superior Swimming in a Supportive Community”

1.  E-mail Blast – This will be our last “official” e-mail blast for the summer season.  I will continue with these in the fall and winter but haven’t determined a date to begin.  I may just send important items as they occur, etc. until we begin the winter season.  Winter dates will be announced at the Awards Celebration next Tuesday, August 18th!

2.  Irish Invitational Results – At last reporting, the meet results for this meet were not finalized.  Not only are they now finalized but they are also posted on the NASA website.  There were many awards earned and those will be distributed at the Awards Celebration.  Those awards are connected to new cuts and those individuals will have opportunities to move groups at the beginning of next season.  Congrats!

3.  Age Group State Meet Results – The goal was a Top 15 finish and the team did one better in placing 14th with 379 points, only 80 points out of the Top 10!  Special congrats to our 13-14 boys as they finished 4th in their age-group with 307 points and were only 18 points shy of being 2nd!  In addition, this group broke ALL 4 NASA relay records!  Individually, Brennen Berger led the way by scoring 104 points and finished 2nd in high-point scoring!  He along with AJ Bernth and Brittney Walters each broke 2 individual NASA records apiece!  So, it was a very productive weekend.  Results will be included in a packet to be distributed at the Awards Celebration.  They will also be posted on the website.

4.  Senior State Meet Results – I want to congratulate our Senior State Team as they placed 8th in the combined team results!  Individually, Emily Wisolek placed 3rd in the girls division for high-point!  Numerous new cuts were achieved and many NASA records were broken.  We will calculate all results this week and place those in the result packet being distributed at the Awards Celebration along with posting on the website.  I also want to thank the Senior Group for being well-behaved!  It was a great TEAM trip – maybe the best Senior State Meet ever for our club!  Thanks!

5.  Central States Zones – I also want to congratulate Brennen Berger, Jeremy Burbrink and Katie Griffin as they participated in the Central Zone meet this weekend in Noblesville!  A “AAA” cut was required to participate.  They represented NASA and Indiana Swimming with great pride.  In addition, congrats again to Coach Spilman and Coach Thomas as they served as the 13-14 year old coaches!  Again, we will calculate all results and place in the result packet being distributed at the Awards Celebration along with posting on the website.

6.  Senior Group Team Trip – Whew, plans are finalized!  It took a little extra work and volunteering from several people but we will be able to have our team trip to Michigan’s Adventure Park.  Special Thanks to Brian Deak for his efforts on this project.  Following is information for those attending the trip:

a.     Meet in the pool lot by 8am on Monday, August 17th and we will leave shortly thereafter.

b.     We have approximately 30 people attending including the 5 adults who will be driving.  We will have seating arrangements worked out for the athletes and announce those on Monday AM as those are being finalized.

c.      Tickets will be purchased this week and we will pick up at group sales upon our arrival.  We have 6 athletes that will receive a refund for their ticket as they were not able to reap the benefits of the senior activity refund due to not qualifying for Senior State.  So, Austin Flager, Chase Kramer, Tyler Matthews, Abbie Merrick, Joey Mueller and Daniel Troyer will be refunded by the Awards Celebration.  Regardless, the 5 driver/chaperone tickets will be paid for along with parking upon arriving at the park.  This is a little thank you for your volunteering for the day and to help offset the cost of travel.

d.     Remember, Michigan Adventure is an amusement/water park so bring appropriate clothing.  Any additional supplies were listed on the information sheet distributed weeks ago.  However, if you no longer have that paper then use common sense and feel free to visit the park website for information at www.miadventure.com as it is very helpful.

e.      The park opens at 11am so feel free to pack a lunch and eat prior to entering the park or eat lunch at the park (don’t forget to bring money if you plan to do so).

f.       We will leave in time to arrive back at Northridge by 10PM and will eat dinner once we leave the park.  Regardless, have money for this meal.  It will be FAST food.

7.  Middlebury Summer Festival – Thanks to Daniel Troyer and Kristi Sandt for organizing the Senior Group Dunk Tank at the festival.  The group earned $250 unofficially!  Great work and due to the weather EVERYONE got wet!  Thanks to those who volunteered to work and sit in the tank!

8.  Award Celebration – Tuesday, August 18th at Camp Singing Hills.  Dinner will begin at 6:15pm but please don’t plan to arrive prior to 5:45pm due to our reservation time.  Remember, NASA is providing the meat and drinks while last names beginning with A-J should bring fruit or dessert and last names K-Z should bring a side dish.  RSVP’s were due to Kristi Sandt a couple of weeks ago but if there is a change in your attendance then please let her know by Friday this week.  This will certainly help in our planning.  Her phone # is 875-0780.  Our awards ceremony will begin as dinner begins to conclude and we will be asking that all families (at least athletes participating this summer, along with parents, be in the dining hall during the entire ceremony – may have outside the dining hall if the weather is nice).  If unsure of how to get to camp singing hills, then from south take CR 35 (just west of the HS) north off of US 20.  It will bend around and become CR 33 and the camp is tucked away on the right after changing to CR 33.  We will be using the dining hall but please bring chairs, blankets, etc.  Finally, the camp requests the following items that could pertain to us so please respect these wishes:  Speed limit on the camp road is 10 mph, NO pets are allowed and we are responsible for all trash – please help us pick-up/clean-up when we finish.  Questions?  Please direct to Kristi or Coach Keller.  See you Tuesday, August 18th

9.  New Northridge Pool Update – We are getting CLOSE!  Yes, FINALLY!  Last week, the pool was filled and began circulating, the bulkhead was delivered and placed in the pool, the large opening in the wall was blocked and bricked and tile is being placed on the deck!  Can’t wait until everyone can see and use the new facility!  Many opportunities are on the horizon.  Just this past week, the new Middle School Pool Director, Charles Grace, began working with me and will do so up until the new pool is completed.  Yes, I am very excited about another aquatic professional being on site to help with our current programming and to generate growth in new programming!  It’s going to be AWESOME!!!
